DIY Wine Barrel Chairs

pull up a seat & check out this great, surprisingly simple, summer DIY project.

MATERIALS you’ll need:

  • Sander

  • Hinges

  • Outdoor wood stain (any color of your choice)

  • 22”–24” outdoor cushions

  • One full-sized wine barrel

  • Two 3/4” 2’x4’ plywood slabs

  • Two 2’x2’x3’ hardwood sticks

  • Power drill

  • Jigsaw

Step one:

Draw guidelines on the barrel for cutting. These should be “L” shaped because you will be cutting out the seat of one chair and the backrest of the other at the same time.

Tip: You only need to draw horizontal lines and pick a spot between two staves to be the vertical line and the barrel will split apart without extra cutting!

Step two:

Drill two holes where the “L”s are so you can get the saw into the barrel. Using the jigsaw, cut along the horizontal guidelines you drew in step one until you reach your marked spot on the other side. Repeat on the other side of the barrel.

Be careful! Make sure you wear safety glasses while using power tools. Two people are necessary for this project as the barrels are heavy.

Step three:

Once the barrels are cut, you need to measure the seat. We decided to split the seat in half so we could add hinges for storage underneath.

You need to measure the front and the back of the seat. You can do this by placing the plywood on the seat and tracing around the outside of the barrel for the front and tracing around the inside of the barrel for the back.

Cut the pieces out using the jigsaw. Once again, be safe!

Step four:

Measure the distance from the bottom side of the seat to the bottom of the barrel. Then cut the hardwood stick to that length. Screw that piece into the bottom of the barrel and connect it to the seat. This will allow the seat to hold the weight of someone sitting down.

Once you’ve got the back of the seat secured, you’re ready for hinges!

Step five:

Sand down the rough edges. You don’t want anyone bumping into those corners and getting hurt!

Since our seats weren’t cut perfectly, our sander fixed the job for us for a nice smooth finish.

Step six:

Our final step is to use outdoor wood stain to seal in the wood! These chairs will be outside in the elements so prepping them to stand up to the weather is crucial!

Once your chairs are dry, pick out a round seat cushion that’s about 24” wide and enjoy!
