HONORING BILL SAUBER: A TRIBUTE TO SERVICE AND COMMUNITY
This Veteran’s Day, We’re Honoring Bill Sauber
Thank you to all who have served our country…
As we commemorate Veterans Day, Balletto Vineyards is privileged to honor one of our most cherished team members, Bill Sauber. Bill, our Global Executive VP of Transportation—affectionately "Truck Driver"—embodies a life dedicated to service, community, and an infectious zest for life.
Born in 1948 as the oldest son of five siblings in the Midwest, Bill's journey took him across the country from Illinois and Minnesota to North Carolina and Pennsylvania all the way to the vibrant heart of California's Wine Country. His life has been a fascinating tapestry woven with threads of commitment, adventure, and deep rooted values. From an early age, Bill planned to serve in the military, a path that led him to meet his wife, Maxine, in 1968 while serving in the Air Force and working with aircraft electronic navigation equipment. Maxine, whose family also served in the military, became his steadfast partner in both life and service.
Bill's military service in Vietnam marked a pivotal chapter in his life in 1972, instilling in him a profound sense of duty and camaraderie. After completing his degree at Cal Poly and a stint in mechanical and welding roles, he embarked on a 20-year career with Ford. There, he discovered a company culture that resonated with his own values—empathy, community investment, and the importance of giving back. His time with Ford and later with Volvo fortified his belief in leading by example, a principle he carried into his community and family life as Maxine and Bill were blessed with two sons - Pete and Glenn.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill's true passion lies in his unwavering commitment to community service. Whether coaching, leading scouts, or participating in youth groups with his two sons, Bill has been a luminary of generosity and mentorship. His involvement with organizations like the Red Cross, United Way, and Rotary Club exemplify his dedication to "paying it forward." He has consistently been a beacon of hope and leadership, setting an example not just for his sons but for all who know him.
Bill's adventurous spirit is equally inspiring. An Ironman participant and Appalachian Trail hiker - from February to August - Bill and his son hiked 2,189.2 miles. He has conquered challenges with the same zeal he applies to his charitable endeavors. Whether summiting Mount Baxter in Maine's winter chill with snow up to his knees or exploring the lush landscapes of Ireland, Scotland, and England, Bill's love for travel underscores his belief in living life to its fullest.
In addition to his remarkable community and professional achievements, Bill's dedication to endurance sports is awe-inspiring. Having conquered the Boston and New York City Marathons, along with 16 other marathons, and completing the prestigious Kona Ironman, Bill's perseverance and commitment shine through every challenge he undertakes. Inspiring those around him to push beyond their limits and embrace every opportunity with vigor.
In 2014, Bill and Maxine returned to Northern California to be near their grandchildren, further enriching our community with his warmth and wisdom. Upon reconnecting with John Balletto through the Sunrise Rotary, Bill joined Balletto Vineyards, where he quickly became indispensable. His efforts in launching the adopt-a-highway program in Sebastopol and his collaboration with community leaders are testaments to his passion for service and environmental stewardship.
Bill Sauber is not just a revered colleague; he is family. His humor, stories, and ever-present smile brighten our days and remind us of the core values that make our community and company thrive. Today, as we honor veterans like Bill, we celebrate a life that exemplifies the spirit of giving, the courage of service, and the joy of living. Thank you, Bill, for your extraordinary contributions and for making Balletto Vineyards a better place. Happy Veterans Day.
